A Designer’s Guide: The Best Home Reed Diffusers
Time and time again, scientific studies prove that fragrances possess the ability to interact with the brain and positively impact cognitive functions, from our stress levels to our moods. Our editors are using that information to their advantage and uplifting their milieus vis-à-vis some of the most sophisticated reed diffusers on the market. Whether you’re looking to elevate a home office, a spacious bedroom, or a great room, this low-maintenance fragrance option is a great choice for anyone who wishes to enjoy their favorite scent for extended periods of time. While other options, such as candles, deploy their scent solely while lit, the best reed diffusers consistently emit a low-level dose of fragrance so your space can develop a subtle signature scent. For extra guidance, we’ve consulted with Nest Casa’s Sara Colombo, who lends her design prowess and cultivated interior design knowledge to share her insider tips on selecting the best reed diffuser options for your home.
What makes reed diffusers different from candles?
Reed diffusers are different from candles in the obvious ways: the materials used to create them and transport the essential oils and fragrance, which is called the “base,” can be different (wax vs alcohol or a pure liquid solution). However, they are different in other ways as well. With a diffuser, you can control the amount of fragrance and consumption rate by adjusting the number of reeds immersed within the diffuser. A diffuser is often chosen when lighting a candle (which can be a fire hazard) is not practical and you are looking for a diffusion of scents without having to actually light and supervise a lit candle. A diffuser can be contained and preserved by removing the reeds and sealing them back in the bottle. A diffuser can also contain a solution that absorbs scent instead of dispersing it, which has its benefits in a kitchen or near a place where you eat and do not want fragrance diffusing near food.
Are there any tips one should consider when they want to invest in a reed diffuser?
Invest in a diffuser that also has refills available, as it’s much more economical and you get more use out of your product. It is also worth investing in a higher-end product for a few reasons: most luxury brands use a proprietary solution or “carrier,” which is optimized for absorption in the reeds and even disbursement of essential oils. Cheaper products use alcohol, which evaporates, or oils that have difficulty traveling through the reeds, so the reeds ultimately get clogged. Additionally, the higher-end brands use better quality fragrance (20% saturation or higher) in their products.
What are some ways to ensure that your reed diffuser lasts as long as possible?
Change the reeds occasionally, but remove them from the diffuser when you’re not using them (ie during extended travel, etc.) If the diffuser is made of clear glass, do not place it in direct sunlight. Finally, always make sure to use the plug on the bottle to preserve the diffuser when it’s not in use.
